Altenberg, Germany — Two-time Olympic Champion Armin Zöggeler won his eighth race at Altenberg, Germany, Sunday, giving him his 44th career victory. The Italian racer finished with a two-run combined time of one minute, 50.344 seconds in the men’s singles event, beating second-place finisher Felix Loch by .183 seconds.

Germany’s Loch crossed the finish line in 1:50.527 seconds, followed closely by German teammate David Möller, who posted a two-run combined time of 1:50.536. Lone U.S. competitor Bengt Walden, a 2002 Olympian (Westborough, Mass. and Lake Placid, N.Y.), finished 15th with a combined time of 1:51.696. Teammate Tony Benshoof (White Bear Lake, Minn.) is still completing extensive physical therapy and is aiming to return for the World Championship competition (Feb.6-8) in Lake Placid. He is scheduled to take his first runs on a sled in over a month later today.

Zöggeler increased his overall standings to 601 points with seven events complete. David Möller still holds second place — 525 points — followed by fellow teammate and fifth-place finisher Jan Eichhorn, in third, with 430 points. Walden sits in 14th place with 204 points, while Benshoof sits in 31st with 73 after competing in only three events.

On Jan. 26, Walden and the rest of the U.S. team will travel to Lake Placid, N.Y., site of the 41st Luge World Championship, to prepare for the competition. Following the Championships in Lake Placid, the World Cup will move to Canada for the final two races.
